With Rudy Crew’s departure, please contact your legislators and ask OEIB be dissolved and scarce funding targeted directly to classroom instruction. Voters and legislators should know that Kitzhaber surrounded himself by unqualified advisors without experience with best practices in public education who are creating more layers of costly bureaucracy far from our classrooms in an undemocratic process. Query why Julia Brim-Edwards was charged with hiring Crew given her mismanagement of PPS, the state’s worst performing district. Brim-Edwards: 1) hired Hurricane Vicki Phillips who created the unfunded K-8 mandate with academic disparities that leave students unprepared for high school and cost N.Portland $1.7M in desegregation grants wweek/portland/blog-6017-hurricane_vickis_lingering_winds.html; 2) ran PPS’ failed construction bond that violated election laws, made misrepresentations about seismic safety, and earned the Oregonian’s pants-on-fire rating for misrepresenting number of students served – while her kids were in private school; 3) lobbied for millions in corporate tax breaks that have drained school funding. Governor’s Education Advisor Ben Cannon attended elite Catlin Gable ($25k yr/ 14 kids per class), taught at private Arbor School and sends his child to Arbor. Cannon has no concept of enormous class sizes with kids coming to school hungry, lacking social services, with language barriers and learning disabilities with no services. Cannon was part of the legislature that botched M66-67 and set us back years on revenue reform. Duncan Wyse, the architect behind OEIB reforms is a career policy wonk who sent his kids to private school. Wyse does not handle business hiring nor understand requisite skill sets for the job market. Whitney Grubbs is a charter proponent and member of the OMADA charter network. One-third of charters do worse than public schools and only 17% do better. Charter schools are also rife with financial mismanagement philly/philly/education/20110620_Stanford_report_finds_good_and_bad_in_Pennsylvania_charter_schools.ht Please contact your legislators and ask them to dissolve OEIB’s costly bureaucracy and target funding directly to classrooms for smaller class sizes and extended instructional time.
