With Sabermetrics proving itself out once again, I was thinking that baseball is truly an Art AND a Science. So I was thinking which managers are true Artists and who are exceptional scientists. Here it is: without a doubt John Farrell and Bob Melvin are Scientists- Farrell works intimately with Bill James, and Melvin works for Billy Bean- but the ultimate, first of the real Scientists was Tony LaRussa; after all LaRussa remade the way Pitching works! As for the Artists, my two choices are Buck Showalter and, my favorite manager ever, Jim Leyland...However, there are also two managers that are BOTH Scientists and Artists: those are Terry Francona and Joe Maddon (who may be the true Einstein among them).
