With Thanksgiving behind us and the holiday season upon us, its time to get back to the messy business of politics....and time to post another politically significant song for this weeks edition of POLITICAL NOTES. I had a bit of a tough time deciding whether I should choose a song about Thanksgiving, giving thanks, the hunger so rampant in this day and age, or the ludicrous and wasteful tradition of shopping till youre dropping on this Black Friday. With the GOP....and our friendly, compassionate friends at FOX NEWS....hitting President Obama and the nations liberals so relentlessly over the issue of illegal immigrants and the presidents plan for dealing with them this past week, a really great late 80s song by one of my favorite artists sprung to mind on Thanksgiving Day....and immediately took precedent. Of course its a song with political overtones.....and lyrics that are sublimely eloquent..... Takes more than combat gear to make a man Takes more than a license for a gun Confront your enemies, avoid them when you can A gentleman will walk but never run If manners maketh man as someone said Hes a hero of the day It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile Be yourself no matter what they say Its the third single from his 1997 album NOTHING LIKE THE SUN and, although far from his biggest hit, a song thats been a personal favorite of mine for decades! What could be more appropriate for this weeks POLITICAL NOTES than the UBER-COOL track by STING, in which he proudly declares hes a LEGAL ALIEN....an ENGLISHMAN IN NEW YORK.
