With a FREE screening of the power-house enviro documentary, Cowspiracy, premiering this Saturday at the Vancouver Public Library at 6:30pm, I feel compelled to share some inspiring words from animal rights activist and a good friend of mine, the lovely Sarah Jayne, who put me onto the film and helped me break down some old belief systems that are no serving me or the planet collectively. Her words are as follows: We NEED the letter writers, the tablers, the leafletters, the lawyers, the politicians, the vegan chefs, the spiritually minded, the website creators, the digital designers, the lobbyists, the artists, the musicians, the environmentalists, the vegan business owners, the naturopaths, the cupcake bakers, the children whose hearts cannot yet tell a lie, the phone callers, the feminists, the civil rights advocates, the bloggers, the celebrities, the athletes, the canvassers, the compassionate mothers, the undercover investigators, the authors, the poverty and world hunger fighters, the culture jammers, the frontline activists, the liberationists, the empowered consumers. We need all of them to succeed in our goal of changing the world for both human and non-human animals. Each person does what they can, and it is all worthwhile. Hearing the stories of individuals about painful realizations, moments of guilt, redemption, deep love, isolation, fear, questioning humanity, sharing moments of sameness, of difference and their journeys was extremely empowering. Deep threads are woven within all of us, human and non-human. It is a tapestry, and everyone is different in their individual path. The fight for animals is intricately related to that of all other social justice movements. While others are oppressed, none are truly free. We can do better, we ARE doing better. It must start with you. If you are silent in times of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. Be brave enough to step outside of your comfort zone, to witness the cruelty and injustice of which you spare yourself the sight, to educate yourself, to question your deep held beliefs. Civil rights champion Martin Luther King, Jr. once delivered a powerful speech with this resonant line: The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice. https://facebook/photo.php?v=260404137484449&set=vb.183622415162622&type=2&theater
