With a band of rain in the forecast...twenty five Racesaver Sprint - TopicsExpress

With a band of rain in the forecast...twenty five Racesaver Sprint Cars made the tow to Penn Can Speedway for the Saturday portion of King of the Can Weekend. A smooth, wide racing surface graced the heat races for all divisions of the one hundred forty cars in the pit area. Then the rains came! Speedway management studied the radar and ( keeping in mind many of the racers traveled quite a few hours to get there), it was decided if they could wait this out, the racing could resume and not have the use the rain date scheduled for the next day. They were right! After a two hour delay, the drivers were treated to fast tacky surface and the racing was awesome! The start of the CRSA A-Main saw former two time series champion, Matt Tanner on the pole with young Joe Kata on the outside front row. Kata picked up his first ever sprint car victory at Penn Can Speedway earlier this year and was looking for win number two. Kata took advantage of the fast outside groove and put his #10 car into the early lead beating Tanner, who was driving the Art Kiser #29, into turn one. Lap three saw the hard charging, Scott Goodrich, slide his #30 under Tanner to grab second with Jeff VanSteenburg running fourth and Josh Pieniazek now fifth. With the leaders now heading into lap traffic, all eyes were on local racer, Parker Evans, as he was using every inch of the racing surface trying to move up from his twelfth starting spot. Caution flew on lap six as the disabled #19 of Dan Hennessy tried to get to the infield taking TSRS invader, Justin Hoffman and his #m16, with him. At the cone of the single file restart it was Kata leading the way with Goodrich close behind. Dustin Purdy slipped under the high flying VanSteenburg for fifth and Evans was now up to seventh, Rookie Jordan Thomas in eighth, Ed Newhauser was ninth coming all the way up from his twenty second starting spot, and Cory Sparks in tenth after starting sixteenth. Kata continued to lead at the halfway mark with a slight advantage over Goodrich. Pieniazek had moved into third, Tanner fourth, and Evans took over the fifth spot. Pieniazek got past Goodrich for second on lap sixteen just before the yellow came out once again as the #21 of Will Glover got turned around in turn four. After the restart, Pieniazek tried a slide on Kata for the lead but it didnt stick. A dog fight for positions fourth on back ensued throughout the remainder of the twenty five laps and it was Joe Kata cruising to his second win of 2013! Pieniazek finished second and Goodrich third. Parker Evans won the battle for fourth. Cory Sparks was coming on strong and grabbed the fifth spot.
