With a holiday weekend approaching, remember these helpful hints to avoid becoming a victim of cargo theft. Use your surroundings to your advantage and be aware of how and where you park. Use buildings, fences, or even other trailers to back up against to make it hard, if not impossible, for cargo thieves to get your trailer doors open. Park in well lit, heavily traveled areas of truck stops, fuel islands, buildings, or restaurants and use the security cameras to your advantage by parking in their field of view. Maintain situational awareness at all times. This includes noticing whether you are being followed or tailed. If you are being followed or think you are being tailed, slow down and change lanes to see if the vehicle passes you. If slowing down does not work and the vehicle continues to follow you, get off at the next exit to see if the vehicle does the same. If you are confident at this point you are being followed, contact dispatch for help. Be careful about what you say about your load and where you are taking it. This extends to CB chatter and even to social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. As always, drive safely! Our next monthly safety meeting will be Friday, July 11.
