With all due respect to my healthful, physician, or otherwise possibly offended friends and family, my casual contemplation of exorbitant cigarette taxation has led me to the following, perhaps obvious, conclusions: 1) It aims to discourage citizens from adopting or maintaining a self- destructive habit, thereby eventually diminishing the need for extended healthcare. In this view, however, the existing healthcare system requires no amendment or reform. We just need to catch up to it or die trying. 2) It establishes steady, reliable tax revenue from the low-income, non-property-owning strata, who are known to be among the heaviest smokers, and who, by definition, contribute the least sales-, property-, and income tax. The first case being a Wait It Out sort of thing and the second being Blood from a Stone. Either way it rubs me the wrong way. And I might delete this.
