With all the buzz around Josh Starling and the alleged eye-gouging incident,it took me back to a former Manly enforcer who knew no boundaries on the field but was as quiet as a church mouse off the field...none other than Les Boyd. Les Boyd was a dynamic forward who put fear in the eyes of the opposition. The only problem with Les was that he didnt have a stop button and often went over the top with his rough-house tactics. It eventually cost Boyd his career in Australia. In the 1983 State of Origin series Boyd was suspended for 12mths for breaking Qld front-rower Darryl The Big Marn Brohmans jaw with a cocked elbow in a tackle.Boyd served out his one year suspension but stunningly, not long after his return,he was outed for 15mths for eye-gouging Canterbury hooker Billy Johnston. It would cost Boyd his Manly,NSW and Australian jerseys. He would never play in the NSWRL comp ever again. He went on to play for Warrington in England in 1985 before retiring in 1989. Les Boyd was as classy as any ball playing forward youre likely to see.His intimidating brand of football would however be his downfall.Which is a shame because he was great to watch and wouldve no doubt finished his career known as one of the greatest forwards the game has ever produced had it not been for send-offs and suspensions. MANLY 4 LIFE!!
