With all the new likes let us bring this up to speed on how The Iraq War Monument was created. 2012 Mayor of Cape Coral John Sullivan wanted the first Monument NOT Memorial in the country to honor all living, wounded and deceased veteran from both Iraq Wars since the Iraq War had just ended. 2013 The Iraq War Monument Committee and the Mayor held a contest for school kids grades 6-12 to say and draw what the Iraq War meant to them. We ended up getting 19 submissions and after all the submissions were gathered we had two rounds of voting. The first round was voted on by all veterans from any war at the VFW Post 8463 in Cape Coral, FL. After that round of voting it narrowed the submissions to 4 where ONLY the Iraq Veterans voted on the final design. The winning submission was drawn by Cape Coral Middle School Student 13 Year Old Xavier Pinero. He also wrote on the submission if he could shake the hand of every veteran and say thank you he would. This was May of 2013. So then we had 6 fundraising events at the Fort Myers Miracle who were unbelievable to us last year in raising funds and help getting the word out. We also had a fundraising event at Anthonys On The Blvd in Cape Coral, FL. Now the designers were: Marble: Family Marble and Granite. Concrete & Re bar: OAK Construction. Pavers: Lowes of Estero #2362 Wooden Posts: Shoreline Lumber Military Branch Seals: Crown Trophy Dog Tags: Military Uniform Supply & US Army JROTC Photos below of the winning submission, Xavier, the official photo and progression photos of the construction and what the monument looks like now.
