With all the recent discussion on kennel cough I think folks would benefit from reading the information on Jp Youshas page on canine infectious respiratory disease CIRD. There are many types of nasties that can cause kennel cough. The different bugs have different incubation periods: one at least is contagious BEFORE dogs show symptoms. In my experience what I consider true kennel cough is actually pretty mild for most dogs-a canine cold that most dogs get over with little or no problem. This (again in my opinion) is so much more than plain ol kennel cough: this has a short incubation period, highly contagious and quickly morphs into high temps and pneumonia. Two facts I found interesting were: 1. A dog may have kennel cough AND some other type of CIRD: the kennel cough allows the system to be weakened opening the door for other stuff. 2 Vaccinated dogs can, of course still get kennel cough but usually its a milder case (thats been my experience too). Bottom line- if you are gonna board your dog at my house youd better have your dog vaccinated or its not staying!
