With all the turmoil in the world today, I needed to go back to a calmer & joyous time. Our first married Christmas was 40 years ago. Larry was a PVT2 in the Army stationed in Germany & I was blessed to have been with him. We lived in our small attic apartment in Eidengessess, Germany & had very little money. I was so homesick & depressed & desperately needed a little Christmas. We woke up on the Saturday before Christmas, to snowflakes hitting our skylight window in our bedroom & when I looked out our side window, everything covered in a blanket of white. Now, most everyone that knows me, also knows that I absolutely love snow & I revert to a little kid at the first snowflake! Larry had to get up at 4:00a everyday to get to base on time & he looked forward to sleeping late on Saturday but I had to wake him up ! There was snow ! We got up, got dressed & went out into a cold, bracing wind. Throwing some snow balls, as we trudged through the snow, holding hands, sharing hugs & newlywed kisses. We were on a search for our first Christmas Tree! We saw a sign that pointed us to edge of our village that we thought meant they were selling trees. The snow continued and we went up a long, steep hill to a farm where the house & barn were connected & there were several cut trees. We chose one & the farmer took our 5DM & pounded in to the bottom wooden strips for a stand. Larry took the tree in one hand & my hand in the other, and we slipped & slid & laughed down the hill. Huge flakes continued and we passed by this little church, which in the summer was covered by wild roses. I always referred to it as the church of the roses & as we passed by, the chimes began to play, Silent Night ~my favorite Christmas Carol. The wind changed direction, the snowflakes were as big as feathers & the chimes continued. And I stopped, because I wanted to linger just a moment so I would never forget this memory. It was if God said to me, This is the Christmas you need. I gave you the man that you love, the snow that you love & the Christmas Carol you love, playing in the background & above all, I gave you my Son, what else could you possibly want, My child? In the past 40 years, there have many Christmases, not picture-perfect & when it gets too much~ I find a quiet place, a cup of coffee & go back to that memory, just like I did this morning. I hope you find your Christmas, in the Gift of Jesus & in the love of your family & friends. Merry Christmas !
