With detractors such as the MIC claiming that Gerakan’s President Datuk Mah Siew Keong appointment as a minister in charge of Indian affairs as an insult has drawn the ire of the party’s vice president, Datuk A. Kohilan Pillay who said that such remarks are detrimental to the unity of Malaysians and against the spirit of Barisan Nasional. “We are now in the 21st century where globalization and economy development supersedes others and MIC should break away from the racial prism of viewing issues. As has being pointed out by our Wanita Secretary general, Jayanthi, a non-racial perspective and mentality should be adopted and questions should not even arise regarding the Prime Minister’s prerogative on appointing a minister”, said Kohilan who also Selangor Gerakan Chairman in a statement .
