With each legislative session, policy makers have many opportunities to positively impact education in Georgia and the teaching profession. Teachers in our state have experienced cuts in benefits and salaries during a time when they are also experiencing larger class sizes, new standards, new testing protocols and a new teacher evaluation system with fewer resources. We have seen a shift towards standardized education. The tests are standardized. The teaching strategies are standardized. The students, on the other hand, are not standardized. Somehow teachers put one foot in front of the other and continue on their daily walk to serve the individual needs of the students in our state. They do this with dignity and grace. As we gear up for this year’s legislative session, will the policy makers in our state take the opportunity to support and empower teachers? Will they work to secure adequate pay and benefits for our profession? Or will they create laws that leave teachers feeling empty and chip away at the “professional” aspect of the teaching profession. Opportunity is knocking! facebook/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Ftimesfreepress%2Fnews%2Fopinion%2Fcolumns%2Fstory%2F2014%2Fdec%2F23%2Fcook-blue-collar-classroom%2F279440%2F&h=0AQE2ryLT
