With her cloak of superiority stripped away, Bethany followed Alex like an indentured servant past dark figures hunkered in the alley ways, past upended garbage barrels that had been picked through for food, past a stringy dog stretched across its owner’s lap. The alley opened onto a dark, narrow street which twinkled with tiny lights strung around leafless trees in a vain effort to brighten a shadowy world at the edge of despair. At the corner was a small hotel which Alex indicated was their destination. The desk clerk nodded as they passed through the lobby and stepped into the elevator. Above the control panel was a poster with timely advice from Confucius: “Ignorance is an obstruction to humaneness, it causes us to act rashly, to resort to violence, to speak unkind words and to neglect the humanity that connects us to one another.”
