With less than three weeks until the Baby Doll Brawl, we sat down with the coaches of team Cheshire Cats (Melistopheles & Wreckonomic Stimulus) to see how the fresh meat training is going. If youd like to see the game in person, click this link: derbydolls/tickets/ LADD: How closely are the skaters of your team bonding? Cheshire: Like most BDB teams, they are definitely building friendships that will last throughout their derby careers and beyond in some cases. Working really hard towards a common goal is an incredible way to get close to someone. I foresee a lot of nicknames and inside jokes! LADD: How many of the fresh meat skaters are skating in their first Baby Doll Brawl on August 9th? Cheshire: Six, but two of them skated in another league previously. LADD: There are a good number of Subpool skaters on this team along with the fresh meat. Are the Subpool skaters mentoring the rookies? Cheshire: The Subbies and other more experienced skaters (who recently transferred from other leagues) are displaying great leadership. They are actively modelling the kinds of skills and behaviors that we value within the league, as well as providing positive and constructive feedback to their fellow teammates. LADD: Who are some fresh meat skaters to watch for and why? Cheshire: Im really excited to see everyone take their game-play up a notch! Weve been a team for less than two weeks at this point, and Im already impressed with the progress everyone is making. Maniac and D-Cup have already shown great communication skills as Pivots, Kat and Fight are proving themselves as excellent blockers and blocker-buddies, and Dez, Twee, Lu, and Die-ana are all making great strides in the jamming department. Honestly, Im so impressed with everyone! LADD: How would you describe the team’s identity? Compared to other teams you have played for or coached, what makes this team unique? Cheshire:The Cheshire Cats are definitely focused on teamwork - growing, learning, and having fun as a group. Everyone has a positive attitude, which just makes it that much more fun! LADD: What message do you want to share with the opposing team in this BDB? Cheshire: Yay derby! LADD: What would this team’s spirit animal be and why? Cheshire: A pink and purple striped cat, obvies. Group photo courtesy of Marshall Garlington.
