With lots of rat size bream plaguing my stomping ground, getting my plastic fantastic past the feisty buggers to the bigger mothers was proving a bit of a mission. I knew where to find bream but the willy wise sizeable bluenoses were harder to fool. Another forecast for a light south easterly and another pre first light start to the day. The tide is a bit low on my flats, a bit lower than what I like it. All things cant always be perfect but the weed bed I wanted to skim my jap plastic over is holding a couple of feet of water over it. A few good swirls and bow waves behind the SkinnyPop but no solid takes for a while. Then, the mystery ZipBait shadowers revel themselves. 1 grunter, 2 grunter, 3 grunter, then a rat bream. I found the kindergarten playground it seemed. I left that schoolyard popper bullying after numerous treble de-hookings and a grunter spiking or two. They always manage to get me the little s##ts. It was almost the peak bite time just before the sun shone its first rays over the horizon. I headed over to a feeding bed of algae and shell grit that I was saving for prime time. First cast with the N.S Black Hole and a big boil blows up just behind the pop. I can feel the fish eye balling the lure but not taking it. Second cast and a similar commotion without hookup. This is nail biting stuff, what makes surface fishing the pinnacle of angling. 3rd cast and my zippy twitches from my shaking nerves resonating through the graphite of the Taifun. Game over for the blackie, 3rd time lucky as the owners stick and hold (just, till just after I land) the 37cm girl.
