With low temperatures and winter showers forecast over the weekend, council staff will continually monitor road surface conditions and temperatures. Pre-gritting and reactive treatments to the primary carriageway network will be carried out as required on a 24/7 basis. It is important to appreciate that it is not possible to treat all routes simultaneously. In this view, the council must adopt a priority system to ensure that the treatment is targeted to areas of greatest need first. Secondary routes such as those in housing estates and rural areas will only be addressed once the primary routes are clear, from Monday to Friday only. Similarly primary footpaths, such as urban shopping areas and precincts, and routes to access schools, health centres and medical centres, will be treated reactively as required seven days per week during winter, with secondary routes addressed once the primary paths are clear, also from Monday to Friday only.. More information on the priority system for tackling winter conditions can be found at westlothian.gov.uk/article/2125/Gritting-and-Winter-Maintenance
