With many around the country protesting after the deaths of unarmed black men by police, the Notre Dame womens basketball team made a statement today during warm ups. The team wore t-shirts with the phrase I Cant Breathe, a reference to Eric Garners last words. “Im not sure what we expected out of it, I just think that it was something we all came together and talked about, and it was a cause that we were all passionate about,” said Taya Reimer, a sophomore on the Notre Dame team. “We all wanted to support it in a way. So this was just our way of getting involved and supporting the message. So I dont think we expected attention from it or anything.” “I think Notre Dame is a place that has always fought for social justice, and I know in my office I have a picture of Father Hesburgh with Martin Luther King Jr. arm in arm for the fight for civil rights,” said Irish head coach Muffet McGraw. The Notre Dame women join other athletes like Lebron James and Derrick Rose, who have also worn the shirt during warm ups.
