With only 40 years out of its 800 years of history the Estonians have been independent, all the other times were ruled by a succession of different people including the Danish, Swedes, Russians, Germans, etc. with so much captures and warfares, a war memorial seems inevitable. Its full of interesting juxtapositions: the memorial was built on the Capitol of Estonia to commemorate the soviets fighting against the Estonians themselves during the Soviet era. A German cemetery ironically sits right on the side. Only 5 minutes ride away from the UNESCO festive old town of Tallinn, the Maarjamae memorial stands quietly in eternity, overlooking the bay frequented by the ferries carrying tourists to and from Helsinki. The location is spectacular, in Hong King this would be a prime piece of real estate. The triangulated landscape rising above the plane looks like wreckages after war. The brutalist design and the Corbusian concrete hand relief reveal its 1960s aesthetics. The landscape is huge, especially when its all covered with white snow, sending chills through my body not sure if its from the cold or the architecture. Honestly I did feel a bit scared when there was basically nobody within sight. Designed by architect A. Murdmaa and sculptor M. Varik.
