With only a few more days to the Election, it seems that the ugly side of politics is rearing its nasty head. Campaign signs are being viciously knocked down, gossip and rumours are spreading like wild-fire, while the social media beast’ continually stirs the pot with lies and hateful comments, often hidden by anonymity. This saddens me because regardless of the results, we are all in this community together. The success of our community is based on our ability to work together, to respect each others opinions and to celebrate the diversity that makes our community a unique and special place. At the very first Campaign Meeting of my team we established that we would run both a vigorous campaign and a scrupulously clean one. Whatever the provocation, we agreed that we would stay within a Code of Conduct that would ensure that we would not be drawn into any disrespectful behaviour. If one of our primary objectives is to raise politics to a higher level of inclusiveness and integrity then the way we conduct our campaign must reflect this. I sincerely apologize if anyone has been negatively affected by any action by my campaign that fall below these standards that we put in place to ensure a fair and respectful election. I also wish to acknowledge and thank my team, volunteers and supporters. You have taken a bold step forward to support me openly, by hosting a sign, declaring your support on social media, volunteering to walk with me, stand by me and knock on doors for me. You have also participated in a video. None of you have hidden your identity, and with all the finger pointing happening out there, this was a brave thing to do. I am truly grateful for everyone that has reached out to me, talked with me, shared their frustrations and desires with me. We can achieve almost anything here in Sooke, when we work together with respect.
