With overwhelming bipartisan support, Congress has passed the ABLE (Achieving a Better Life Experience) Act. This legislation will allow individuals and families of children with disabilities to save money for many disability related expenses such as education, transportation, or employment without jeopardizing important health or income supports. Currently, individuals with disabilities who depend on federal health or income benefits (such as Medicaid or SSI) cannot have more than $2,000 in cash savings or assets, which makes it impossible to save money for emergencies or investments in the future. That restriction is now lifted, which opens a way towards financial independence for millions of people living with disabilities.
