With photographers just starting out I hear the CRAZIEST things as they seek to find their way. ---art is subjective…its not ---better camera means better pictures ---the more frames I shoot the better the chances I’ll get a good shot ---you need to shoot wide open in order to get a “blurry background” ---if you shoot different things you will be a better photographer…. (and the list goes on) Yesterday a new shooter told me that “The model/subject is the creator of the image.” Now this is not to disparage models/subject; however,………….WAIT WHAT?! Hold on Cletus. The model/subject is the creator of the image?? First off what is photography or rather a photographer? A photographer (the Greek (phos), meaning light, and (graphe), meaning drawing, writing, together meaning drawing with light) is a person who takes photographs, or more simply put a person who “Captures’ light.” The subject, whether it be the model, or a dog, or a bird, isn’t the one who captures light……that is what the photographers does. Thus, the photographer is the creator of the image. The subject/models can and do give valuable input on a photoshoot. In order to give the client what he/she wants you need their input, but they are not the one’s who capture light, who create the image. And if we are being honest one does not need a model to create an image….or even a good image. A lot of times when you are starting out don’t be in such a rush to refute information just because it is different than what you believe, or chalk up the differences in understanding as “that’s just your opinion.” Ask for clarification, seek to understand so we can all learn together.…..lest you end up walking around looking foolish. -Parris
