With practice youll know when you switch into Alpha. For me my mind briefly goes still by itself, with a kind of lurch. Its like changing gears on a car. Instead of your thoughts being deliberate and directed things they become more passively listened to, a bit more random, emergent, wandering in unexpected and unintended directions. To cross over this stage there are different approaches. Now that the mind is relaxed it can be brought to the center of the body via the 7 Bases of the Mind. As a beginner it is good to use this method to get a feel for the center of the body. How long you spend on each base is up to you, traditionally just long enough for three repetitions of the mantra Samma Arahang. I like to just breathe through the 1st Base, the right nostril for men, left nostril for women, and let my awareness go through the Bases by itself, in its own time, and I notice how the consciousness subtly shifts as it switches from one to another. But if the mind is not familiar with the pathway inwards then you can lead it from one to the next when you just feel ready to move on. You can also go up and down from 7th to 1st and back again until the mind clicks into the 7th Base. Later on the mind will go easily to the center of the body directly, even stilling by itself. But for most of us at this point using Samma Arahang is a good idea, to put extra distance between us and those wandering thoughts, making us not get involved in them which could put us back in Beta, instead both the Mantra and the thoughts become background noise you can pretty much ignore. Some people like to use Samma Arahang 500 times, counting them, but I recommend this only outside of sitting meditation or if you have a really noisy mind. The problem is the counting keeps the left brain active, it is too intentional. With a lot of practice of it the counting may become more automatic though. I still include a link to it below without the counting, for beginners. However, to go deep you need to switch off from the outside world, so all meditation tapes are just for beginners. We dont want to be listening to external sounds, nor even to the mantra or our thoughts. So we must make the mantra a subconsciously repeating loop, like a song stuck in your head, repeating by itself. Only this way will you be able to go deeper into relaxation. If it works the thoughts will still, or youll feel like abandoning the mantra and being in quietness, with just some calm passing background ripples of thought. This is the beginning of shifting into Theta. สัมมาอะระหัง 500 ครั้ง+เพลง: youtu.be/wTXECSRX5GU omharmonics/blog/alpha-brain-waves/
