With the New Year, many people reflect on dietary habits and resolve to “eat better this year.” A new trend to support locally produced foods by spending 10 percent of your food budget on community agriculture products is gaining in popularity. Money spent on goods and services with community-based, rather than national or international, companies can benefit economic development and well-being. For example, if a family spends $100 per week on groceries, they would pledge to spend at least $10 a week on locally produced foods. This could include fruits and vegetables, dairy products, eggs, grains, meat, poultry, fish and value-added products like honey, jams, relishes, sauces, baking mixes or herbs and seasonings. By spending your food dollar locally, you are supporting your neighbors. You might also eat a healthier diet with more seasonal fruits and vegetables. The local food businesses that receive your money will spend some of their income with other local businesses. Businesses in your community pay taxes to support local government. It may take a little extra effort to make spending 10 percent of your food budget locally. But supporting your neighbors and eating a healthier diet while supporting agriculture and green space is well worth the effort.
