With the Russian army busy these days invading a nearby country, our first MOVIES YA MIGHTA MISSED MONDAY installment for 2015 harkens back to a previous conflict waged by its predecessor. THE BEAST (aka THE BEAST OF WAR) takes place in 1981, with the Soviet Red Army getting bogged down in the meat grinder of Afghanistan. A tank, captained by the psychotic Commander Daskal (George Dzundza) and driven by the conscientious Koverchenko (Jason Patric), attacks a Pashtun village and kills a score of people, but gets lost turning away from the scene of the crime. Young villager and guerilla Taj (Steven Bauer) gathers a group of fighters to chase the machine and take it down in revenge. Meanwhile, Koverchenko butts heads with the increasingly brutal Daskal, and is thrown out of the tank to be left as a human trigger of a booby trap set for the guerillas. But things don’t go according to plan, and soon Koverchenko is again thrown into battle… but AGAINST his onetime comrades, in the service of the mujahideen. THE BEAST is a solid, old-fashioned war movie helped immeasurably by several fresh plot turns that veer well away from the many clichés of the genre. The main conflict in the story is not, for once, our heroes versus their enemy, but the thoughtful soldier against his nightmare of a superior. That battle plays out very well, yet director Kevin Reynolds and writer William Mastrosimone also make sure to keep the overlaying chase story lively and tense, with plenty of solid action sequences. THE BEAST isn’t an easy movie to find, but is well worth the effort for those who want a little more than the typical Hollywood combat fare. #movies #warmovies https://youtube/watch?v=PxS3CL-IewY
