With the acquisition of a land and building, Miss World Guyana 2014 Rafieya Husain is one step closer to fulfilling her dream.... The ethos of ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ has been taken to heart in Guyana, with reigning Miss Guyana World Rafieya Husain diligently pursuing her goal in alleviating the suffering for victims of domestic violence.The latest developments include the acquisition of a suitable building and its surrounding land for the creation of an outreach centre, which would provide advocacy, education and preventative measures to help families and communities live in harmony, and ultimately end domestic abuse. Regional Chairman Parmanand Persaud and Regional Executive Officer Sunil Singh were in attendance at a presentation of the building, with renovation work already underway to prepare the center for its opening. Also present at the presentation of the land were Mr. Denesh Mohan, Supt of Works, Region # 2, Ms. Nandranie Coonjah, RDC Councillor, Ms. Keshana Dyal, Counselor and Portia Jacobs, Expenditure Planning & Management Analyst for the Regional Office. Why Domestic Violence? – Rafieya’s Inspiration Rafieya’s passion for improving lives and making a difference started from an early aged inspired by her late grandfather, Shaffeek Khan. His philanthropic work for the community; building schools for children, is one of the reasons she is so inspired and also, by her own personal experience with domestic violence as a teen; to build an outreach center in Essequibo for teens experiencing the abuse through dating and full blown domestic abuse victims and survivors. Rafieya is asking all of Guyana to join in her campaign to stop domestic violence and bring awareness to the early signs of it.
