With the advent of the new school year, Seminary begins anew for younger churchgoers. Elders’ Quorum members who grew up in the faith will remember their Seminary experiences very well. Over the years, the Church has filmed many short video presentations to serve as Seminary teaching aids. And with that in mind, we ask our quorum members, “What is your favourite Seminary video?” Please post your preferences in the comments below. My own selection is appended here: “Firm in the Faith of Christ” (1995), which celebrates the exploits of the great Captain Moroni and exhibits remarkably high production values for a Church film of the period. This particular version of “Firm in the Faith of Christ” constitutes the seldom-seen, full-length edit of the video, (the Director’s Cut, you might say,) whereas this film is often presented in a shortened form, reduced to just the first of its two segments from the Book of Mormon. That customary act of truncation is astonishing and unforgivable, as the second of the two Captain Moroni scenes in the clip — the one that is often cut — is supremely inspiring. It comprises the only professional-quality adaptation to date of the most iconic visual in the entire Book of Mormon: the moment when Captain Moroni defiantly raises the Title of Liberty. (The source of that scene is Alma 46, which, I assure newer members of the Church who might not yet have read it, is the most legitimately thrilling chapter in all the latter-day scriptures.) Watch for the shots in which Captain Moroni dons his gleaming bronze armour, piece by piece, in just the same manner that the Dark Knight assembles his black uniform in Batman Begins, or that any number of super-heroes in cinema and pulp fiction and graphic novels “suit up” before venturing into battle. The actor portraying the renowned Nephite hero does a fine job in the part, and the cinematography is quite strong. https://youtube/watch?v=GId51ugocZg
