With the anticipated lay-offs in the oil bidness , it might be a good idea to pause and take stock of what Midland has and what it needs . For one thing , we have discovered the Permian Basin has MUCH more oil than originally thought . More than Saudia Arabia and the finds in the Dakotas are just as spectacular . In the 70s there was talk of the world running out of oil and wed burn entire forests trying to keep warm and a host of other wild assumptions. Now we know where giant oil is . Now we know how to get it profitably , we dont have to try and discover how to make oil ( like the nazis tried) because theres enough to share .If ever the need arises we can get to this bounty in a heartbeat...... if we plan for it . I see some money to be made during this layoff for forward thinkers . We all know how the world works and sooner or later some potentate is going to try and deny us buying their oil and well have to mine and use our own . Why not be ready for the next boom ? Have areas of the city ready for temporary and low-cost housing with electric /water/gas etc , ready to be set-up in a moments notice . Lowcost housing contractors ready to build quickly and cheaply. Take advantage of the lull by widening the streets and counties/oil companys private roads by putting asphalt on their roads to the wells . Checking for traffic trouble-spots. Seems to me this lull might be the best thing for our city to prepare for the next BOOM . Everyone was praying for another BOOM after the 80s , but no one seemed to prepare for it ! With what we now know about the Permian Basin , these BOOMS are inevitible. Now we may have time to get ready for the next
