With the cold snap well underway, DCM staff have those having to rough it out there foremost on our minds. In the last quarter 44 people experienced rough sleeping/living in cars in Wellington, six of whom were women. During that same period DCM assisted 14 people to obtain a tenancy, but only one was from the most severe end of the homelessness scale (rough sleeping). In our experience the homeless somehow manage to make do, even in this kind of weather, and some even prefer to rough it over going to a shelter. If you see someone sleeping rough, do encourage them to come see us at DCM, 2 Lukes Lane. The one thing we never do is give up trying to assist people to get off the streets and find their own place.
