With the current dispute between Russia and Ukraine over the region of Crimea and its major city Sevastopol, this was a particularly interesting (and unusually current) addition to our online inventory this past week: The Battles of Sebastopol -- a 13-page folio sheet music composed by Charles W. Glover in about 1855 -- commemorating the 1854-1855 Siege of Sevastopol. The siege of the city, home of Russias Black Sea Fleet both then and now, was the culminating episode of the Crimean War. The Russians were defeated, escaping to the north of the city over a pontoon bridge, but not before scuttling their entire fleet both to prevent it from falling into enemy hands and to block an easy entrance of the western alliances ships into the port of Sevastopol. This siege has given rise to many other historic pop-culture references, including The Thin Red Line, The Charge of the Light Brigade, and the celebrated work of Florence Nightingale. The sheet music, disbound from what was likely a larger volume of music, has a wonderful Sarony & Co. lithographed battle scene on its front cover.
