With the exception of a few intermittent happy moments, today has been yucky – thank you very much! How’s that for a positive attitude and grateful heart? But if we don’t report and “fess up” about the down side, you may be tempted to dismiss the up side. Besides, there’s no need to sugar-coat the awfulness of the disease Honey is enduring and I am tending. As our friend, Janet, says – “it’s definitely not for sissies!” Honey is far from being a sissy, but it is still wiping her out most of every day of late. And at this point, we don’t really know if the culprit is the cancer or the chemo to control it. Yes, we are angry, though not at God – although Honey did say early in the week that she wanted to kick Him in shin. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if God joins us in our anger. Cancer, suffering, and host of other bad things in the world were not at all what He had in mind for His creation. I, for one, plan to talk that over with Him one of these days. But more than anger, God is One of love Who goes with us…we believe. Yesterday, Honey insisted that I go to Birmingham to attend Nathan’s Youth Choir home concert. Of course she wanted to go, but just wasn’t up to it. However, she did get to attend via FaceTime which was just wonderful. The choir did great and we are proud of the work Nathan has done for the past three semesters holding that group together and conducting them like a bloomin’ pro. The choir even sang “Be Still, My Soul” for Honey. How special was that! Even though I drove back last night, our friend, Myrte came and spent the afternoon with Honey and then spent the night. We certainly appreciate and enjoy her. This being Mother’s Day weekend, all our gang planned to be here. This morning we called that off because Honey felt so bad and she didn’t want the grandkids to be here when she couldn’t smile convincingly, fun around with them, and most importantly not be able to “make the Target run.” But Weslee and Nathan are coming by themselves and as Weslee says, “leave the noise at home.” Nathan’s Corri and Wes’ Chris are great kids-in-law and we love them dearly and appreciate their keeping the home fires burning. I’d like to share one of my favorite new hymns in the Celebrating Grace Hymnal. It seems to speak meaningfully to our family this Mother’s Day weekend. Like a mother with her children You will comfort us each day, Giving guidance on our journey as we seek to find our way. When we walk through fiery trials You will help us take a stand; When we pass through troubled waters, You hold out Your tender hand. In Your image You have made us, calling each of us by name, Giving strength for every challenge as our gifts we fully claim. We can hear you gently saying, “Do not worry, do not fear; For I’ll always go beside you; every moment I am near.” Thanks be to God; His comfort and guidance unto all! M & H
