With the falling birth rate in Singapore, the number of NS enlistees in the future is expected to decline. But the SAF has started tapping on technologies to deal with the impending manpower crunch. For instance, our Formidable-class frigate needs only 71 men to operate; other similar warships elsewhere need about 150 men! This is the kind of breakthrough that these researchers from local universities and SMEs hope to come up with. They gathered at the Defence Research and Technology Seminar 2014 on 16 May to exchange ideas, and hopefully come up with suitable research projects that could benefit the defence of Singapore.
