With the festive season less than two months away, a pretty horrifying prospect in itself, the turkeys have arrived early this year. First of all Smokey Robinsons worst ever album of pointless duets. Then Aretha, sadly drawing attention to the unavoidable fact that the voice aint what it used to be. And now another artist Ive loved for over 50 years, releases a musical embarrassment. Dionne, why have you rerecorded some of your classics in these patently inferior versions? Do Cyndi Lauper, Jamie Foxx, Billy Ray Cyrus and others add anything to the definitive original versions? I think not. Dionne has had some well publicised financial difficulties recently, but this wont help matters in my view. Looks like the era of the classic soul artist is drawing to a close. It does make you wonder what James Brown, Luther Vandross, Phyllis Hyman, Curtis Mayfield, Johnnie Taylor, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye, etc, would be serving up were they still with us. We now very much need to look to the future for credible soul music. Artists such as Portia Monique, Angela Johnson, Calvin Richardson, Omar and Carmen Lundy are the artists we will have to rely on and embrace from this moment onwards.
