With the intention of this government to increase surveillance to ensure that we are not suspects, Id have people read Richard Flanagans novel, The Unknown Terrorist which he wrote after Howard legislated through the Senate extraordinary measures to detain people. It was published in 2007 and was reviewed by Peter Conrad. A government, with the powers to manipulate and coerce people he described then, could apply now. Richard Flanagan cared then about what kind of country we were becoming. Im sure those concerns are just as real now. Sometimes novelists can wake us up. He certainly made clear to me just what the possibilities were.
