With the ongoing Ebola outbreak in West Africa, many people in the US may be wondering how CDC protects our borders from the possibility of incoming illness. CDC works closely with partners like Department of Homeland Securitys Customs and Border Protection at US airports and land borders to detect ill travelers who could have a contagious disease. CDC operates 20 Quarantine Stations across the country – these stations cover 85% of all incoming travelers. Staff at these stations are able to use public health practices including isolation of ill travelers or quarantine travelers exposed to a contagious disease. These practices limit the introduction of infectious diseases into the US & prevent their spread. While CDC has the authority to quarantine or isolate for certain diseases, this authority is rarely used – there have only been a few cases in recent history!
