With the recent news about the murder of Jennifer Laude, it has been exposed that there is continuing hate and discrimination for the LGBTQ community. But more than that, what we have witnessed is the neglect of our state to assert its sovereign will in pursuing justice. We even cannot take hold of the custody of the ‘suspect’. Their reason is that the ship carrying him, even if it’s within the territorial boundaries of the Philippine state, carries “extraterritorial” powers. This is what we call independence. This is what we call freedom.
