With the sequester’s massively induced budget cuts thousands of military families are being affected. This summer many on-base pools and water parks will be closed or have reduced hours. James Baker a military spokesman said that by reducing hours and closing some water parks and pools the military is expected to save around $2.3 million, reports the Military Times. One of the biggest money savers is not having to hire lifeguards or pay for pool maintenance. In Norfolk, the world’s largest naval base, two indoor pools remain open but an outdoor pool and a water park have been shut down for the summer. Because of the closures many military families will either have to do without aquatic entertainment this summer or pay the high off- base prices. Some members of the military say that the pool perks are about more then just entertainment. They actually provide a sense of community for a group of people who frequently have to uproot, leaving behind friends and family. Others claim that the pools serve as good wholesome leisure activity for young military members who would otherwise frequent less wholesome off-base establishments, like bars.
