With this being our last Thursday on the air as a morning show, we thought wed do one of Tims best of blogs from the past several years. Here it is: I pretty sure God hates numbers. On second thought, maybe God just hates the way his creation has decided to use them. Heres why. When it comes to stats and percentages and averages, we often implement numbers in one of two ways: 1. To condemn others. 2. To condemn ourselves. You fall in the first category if, like me, you tend to critically analyze those around you. They were only at church twice this summer. Or, He must be fifty pounds heavier than in high school. Or, Thats the third new car shes bought in the last five years! You fall in the second category if you tend to use numbers to critically analyze yourself. Why cant I be a size four like I used to be? Or, I cant believe Im only making $10 an hour. Or, The doctor says people with my type of cancer only have a 25% survival rate. I call this mental trap statistical paralysis. We use numbers to keep those around us in their place...or to resign ourselves to ours. Its part of the human condition, I suppose. However, when it comes to our worth, our value, our destiny--and that of others--God doesnt use numbers much at all. He uses absolutes. In Romans 3:23-24, we read, For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace... Not two, or a thousand, or 50%. All. A few chapters later in Romans it says, And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love...No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord. Dont let numbers or percentages or equations paralyze your life. Remember, God works in absolutes. He loves everybody. No exceptions. And nothing you could ever say or do will change that. Im 100% positive.
