With this trip, I will have visited around 30 countries... I am generally fearless when it comes to exploring new places and doing new things. In 1991, in the final, complicated throes of the Contra War, I drove from Washington, DC, all the way to Managua, Nicaragua -- going through Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras with a three-year-old baby in the backseat of a two-door Chevy Cavalier. I mastered driving on the left side of the road in Jamaica and throughout the Eastern Caribbean. I have made the trip from Managua to Tegucigalpa a kazillion times and from Managua to San Jose... But let me tell you, Jakarta wins the Nobel prize when it comes to smog and traffic. I would have to think long and hard about driving in this city... there are 10 motorcycles on the road for each car. And there are no rules.... everything is fair game. Yikes.
