Withdrawal of instincts, the great boon. Naturalists amongst our peasants can forecast floods by observing the movements of the ants. It has been observed that animals show signs of panic well in advance of earthquakes and other natural calamities. They know by instinct of the impending danger. If man did have this instinct, he could have tried to save himself better. Yes, man is trying giving forecasts, using his acquired knowledge. But these forecasts sometimes go wrong, while instinct is always infallible. All animals know their right food instinctively. Which of the herbs is harmful, they can tell by just sniffing at it. The bees and the ants have made up marvelous social systems, by the dictates of instinct. Why then man has been deprived of the benefits of instinct? Why does man get poisoned by ingesting certain herbs or fish? Why can’t he identify the harmful material by sniffing? Why does not man have a perfect society, free of disharmony, free of cheating and sulking, and without deprivation for anyone? Is it due to wrath of Allah, that man has not been given the benefits of instinct? No, definitely not. Rather it is the greatest boon. Instinct though infallible, cannot be improved upon, but acquired knowledge has no limits. Allah by withdrawing instincts from man, has set his limits of progress sky-high. The withdrawal of instinct has a definite purpose. Man the elite of creation is to rule the earth. So his greatness must be acquired by his own efforts. Why man’s own efforts? So that man is to be held responsible and answerable, for whatever he does. The provision of acquired greatness is the greatest proof that there has to be an answerability for man in the hereafter. There has to be a day of judgment, there must be paradise and hell, reward and punishment.
