Within a week of of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria blowing through Mosul, The New York Times had five correspondents and four photographers on the ground in Iraq. The two-room Baghdad bureau has swollen its local staff to 28 from 1 (it was 140 in 2009) and a dormant stringer network throughout the city and country has been reactivated rather like journalistic sleeper cells planted behind terrorist lines, write my colleagues Alissa Rubin and Rod Nordland.
