Within the next five minutes another record will be broken. Soon after Prof. Mutharika announces the name of Kanyama as IG-designate, Dzonzi congratulates him and wishes him well. This has not happened before. Announcements bordering on who replaces which IG are done when the individuals concerned are in two separate places. “You have appointed the right team,” says Dzonzi. “In fact, we were Squad mates in Police College.” Thirdly, it is the first time an incumbent President makes such an announcement in the presence of members of the media from both public and private institutions. It is, therefore, a new record on access to public information. That is not all, though. By becoming Malawi’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Prof. Mutharika becomes the first President to appoint a former IG to such an influential position. Dzonzi is now a diplomat to boot, representing Malawi at the highest level in international relations. As Prof. Mutharika finally rises from his seat, the Sanjika audience wonders about what new records he is set to break? It is a question whose answer will probably come another day; maybe not very far from today. But it is enough to say the past six months have been records-breaking!
