Within two days of arriving at the park I was offered two after school jobs one as newspaper boy and the other as as a carbage collector in the caravan park. I took both jobs, after discussing it with my parents. I was excited about the carbage collection I knew one could tell a lot about peoples carbage..and I wanted to know the Australians may be their carbage would give even more insight into the secret lives of Ausies. Imagine a 12 year old boy being in charge of the Garbage Department at a large Caravan park, collecting, emptying and disinfecting 67 garbage cans three times per week. In the 1960s we were much, much more concerns about saving the environment. The garbage had to be sorted and separated; glass bottles, magazines, newspapers, cardboard “Tinnies” or beer cans made from thin sheet metal, there were no aluminium cans in those days and no plastic bottles or bags, all had their own recycle containers. Most of the glass bottles I returned to the shops and collect back deposits, many young people found bottles and returned bottles for pocket money. The money I made was given to Bets, for our house she said..our house which we would soon build withour own hands Obviously I had to look through other peoples garbage, Mr. Hanson the owner did instruct me about privacy and not to talk to other people what was in their garbage. Oddly, my keen interest in Archeology and History had given me enough information that analyzing the garbage of a country would tell me something about the prevailing culture, people’s behaviours and what lifestyles they had. My garbo work would give me an opportunity of what Australians were like, you can know a culture through its carbage I thought. Not only that,but I got to know many people very quickly and found amazing objects in the rubish besides rubbish Waarom zijn wij zo dom geworden dat kleine baantjes voor kindere achter school niet meer mag in Australie. Er was een tijd van verlichting, toen heel veel kinderen een krante ronde hadden vóór of na schooltijd, er was een morgen en een avond krant. Jongens en meisjes werkte deeltijd- opdrachten voor zakgeld en om te sparen voor de grote dingen zoals een fiets of een vakantie of een 45 single opnemen, je moest werken voor wat je kreeg. Na twee dagen op het caravan park te zijn kreeg ik een job aangeboden door de eigenaar van het park om de vuilnis bakken te legen en het vuilnis te sorteren voor het milieu. Ik zou 10 shilling per uur krijgen en het was twee uur werk , vier dagen per week. Ik pakte deze job direkt aan ook al had ik een andere job om kranten in de brievenbussen te stoppen dat deed ik ook. dacht dat ik zou kunnen begrijpen Australiërs zelfs beter in op zoek naar, en bestuderen hun vuilnis, net als archeoloog in het stort van oude culturen. Het waren goede verdiensten al wat ik verdiensten werd aan Bets afgegeven..voor ons huis zei ze
