Without realizing it had been 10 yrs to the day, my cousin & I - TopicsExpress

Without realizing it had been 10 yrs to the day, my cousin & I spent the morning cooking & talking about the Tsunami that took 250,000 lives. My machal & machan(cousins), Mama(uncle) & Maami(aunty) had planned to be on a train to Galle that was destroyed with no survivors, but an uncle in Colombo asked them to come for post Christmas dinner-- so they were amidst those who randomly survived--witnessing the far less lethal waves turn blue to brown as it surged the capitol citys shores. We talked about those who endured horrors & survived, the immense kindness of strangers across unknown languages, the unimaginable pain of those who lost everyone they loved. About the inevitable suffering of an intricate imperfect shifting evolving planet. And the unnecessary human made suffering we are responsible for causing & stopping. We spoke of the disasters that have followed in Haiti, Bangladesh, the Philippines and more. We talked about the possibility of a parallel world where they took the train, and those in their seats survived and whether a soul can be in two dimensions at once and the likelihood of extraterrestrial life. Only an hour later did we realize it was the 10 year anniversary. We turned the TV on to Sky News and for a moment it seemed the whole world was part of our conversation as we saw images & maps from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Thailand, Indonesia, India, Somalia & South Africa--people mourning, praying, commemorating, and remembering. Until we changed the channel to Fox to see that the American news station was reporting on Brad Pit and Angelina Jolies daughter dressing like a boy.
