Without realizing it, you are making Dua every day, in every prayer just by reciting Surat al-Fatiha. The surah starts off praising Allah (swt): “All praise is [due] to Allah , Lord of the worlds.” Then it mentions His Names and Attributes: The Beneficent, The Merciful, The Owner of the Day of Recompense. Then we admit our utter need of Allah: ”It is You we worship and You we ask for help.” And finally, we make the Dua “Guide us to the straight path.” I love this because right at the beginning of the Qur’an, Allah (swt) is already showing us how to make Dua! First, be grateful for what He’s given you; second, recognize and mention His Beautiful Names and Attributes; third, know and admit your utter need for Allah’s help; and lastly, we ask what we need MOST from Him, His guidance.
