Without regional integration, the countries in South Asia cannot achieve expected development goals. Speaking at “Vision 2034-Regional Cooperation” organized by Delhi Policy Group, a leading think tank in India on October 17, 2014, Dr Shirin said that India is a tested and trusted friend of Bangladesh. With shared history of colonialism and struggle for independence, Bangladesh and India are partners in extending friendly support to each other in different sectors, including trade and investment, power and hydro power generation, water resources management, combating terrorism, ensuring people-to-people connectivity and transit, eradicating poverty, ensuring food security, peace and stability, combating violence, and sustainable development. Dr Shirin insisted that for the ultimate development of the region, all the countries should explore the most possible potential through regional efforts and that we should proceed with all out sincerity and cooperation. She emphasized the importance of the role SAARC can play in ensuring regional integration and cooperation such that we will not only rejoice our successes together but also mourn the failures. Presided over by former Secretary-General of SAARC, Mr Sheel Kant Sharma, several prominent South Asian resource persons were present at the conference; notable among the speakers were Commerce Minister of Nepal, Mr. Sunil Bahadur Thapa, and former Foreign Minister of Sri Lanka, Mr. Rohitha Bogollagama.
