Withstand the Onslaught I have been mixing and interacting with several different groups these past months. Some of them have been in the political realm, others in the business and some social. Here are some quick observations thus far. - In the political realm (local and regional levels) there is no real, observable form or practice of professionalism. Keep in mind that I don’t mean a “professional” politician in the popular sense, but professionalism in the sense that one would have an ethical standard, education and moral fortitude in the way they act and conduct themselves. - I think that in some ways it may be safe to say that no one (politically) really knows what they’re doing…at least at this level of which I have observed thus far. Please understand I dont mean that as some assumption or arm chair quarterback...I mean that from actual observation and deduction. - There are no teams, only individuals…this seems to be an indicator that there are no effective leaders, or at least none that are easily visible due to the lack of their impact. This applies to both politics and business. Though I will admit, to seeing more of a team like atmosphere in the local businesses due to their association and willingness to work together. One thing I have learned and would like to reinforce with you. Leaders of any type and at any level need to be able to withstand the verbal onslaught of others. If you’re the leader of a community (business or politics) you need to be prepared to face and accept that someone will at some point voice their upset. If you’re an elected community leader, and you cannot deal with even the simplest of hostility…then how can you be expected to perform in the face of (worse case?) a municipal or community disaster? How can you be expected to perform when the pressure is on and the public needs your leadership? If you can’t take a simple verbal onslaught, then perhaps you need to re-evaluate being there.
