Witness Sydney Schanberg resumed his testimony in the morning - TopicsExpress

Witness Sydney Schanberg resumed his testimony in the morning sessions of 6 June 2013 via videolink from New York. He further described the situation before and during the evacuation of 17 April 1975. He also elaborated on measures taken by M. Dirac and F. Bizot at the French Embassy to rescue Cambodians from the Khmer Rouge. The Witness also recounted how his assistant Dith Pran rescued him when he was arrested by KR. Before his Defense Team examined Schanberg, Nuon Chea volunteered a statement that explained how CPK ordered Phnom Penh evacuation to anticipate US bombing and Vietnamese invasion and all zone leaders were under order to receive and accommodate the evacuees. Nuon Chea’s Counsel, Victor Koppe, subsequently examined Schanberg on his career as a journalist in Southeast Asia, the effects of US bombings, the role of US military advisors in Cambodia, and food shortages in Phnom Penh. At times, exchanges became particularly heated between Schanberg and Koppe, sparking numerous objections by the OCP. The Witness testimony will resume tomorrow at 08.30.
