Witt Shields Homeplace This is what remains of the Witt Shields homeplace. The first photo is of what is now called Shady Lane. It was the direction of the Loop road back before the Park Service redone the Loop road. Down Shady Lane and across the branch youll find the foundation (photo 4) of either his home or an outbuilding. Photos 2 and 3 are of a (upside down) concrete water tank he used for his refrigerator. It sat on his back porch. He ran a water pipe from up behind Carter Shields place to it. Some time later he ran pipe from this tank across the filed over to the Consolidated School that was in the close vicinity of the Primitive Baptist Church. He did this so the children would have water while at school. Before he did that, the closest water was Abrams Creek, which was a considerable distance. The water tank still lies near where the house stood.
