Wohoo!!! We are beyond thrilled to announce weve welcomed Safe Humane Chicago Court Case Dog Fred into our foster program!!!! We wanted to share some pictures of his first day in his new foster home walking in the sunshine, waiting for some good food and napping, as well as, share his story with you so you understand why hes so special to us. When police responded to a possible neglect situation in April they knew they had to help when they met two older, malnourished dogs. There was no trace of food or water, there were feces everywhere and the floorboards were saturated in urine. Fred was one of two dogs in the home (Ethel has also found rescue). He is about 8-9 years old and the volunteers with Safe Humane Chicago fell a little in love with this goofy, happy senior and took good care of him while he waited for rescue at CACC. He was wobbly, experienced a few seizures, never seemed to gain any weight and working with the vet staff it was clear he needed to find a stress free environment so we could really figure out what was going on. Thankfully, we found a wonderful foster for him!!! His Senior Wellness Panel (blood work and urinalysis) looked pretty good. We had x-rays of his chest done to see if his seizures were related to heart issues and x-rays of hips in case that was why he was wobbly. They came back normal. He has a raging case of giardia (an intestinal parasite) which hes probably had for a long, long time, so we started treating it immediately. He was only 34 pounds and should probably be closer to 50-55 pounds, so good nutrition is top priority. The rest is a wait and see, so his foster is keeping a log of his symptoms. We truly have no idea if this is all due to his emaciated condition and neglectful past or if there is something worse lurking like a brain tumor or cancer. Well know more in the next few weeks. We are committed to do everything necessary to ensure Fred is well taken care of in his foster home and will spare no expense for this sweet and special boy.
